Botijo Tomé

“Botijo Tomé”, is a redesign of traditional Spanish earthenware pitcher.

“Botijo Tomé” is made out of ceramic, and it can be used as a pitcher. Its form allows for filling it with a tap, but also facilitates dining using.

This proyect is based on replacing plastic for ceramic, which is fewer polluting and has a longer lifetime. It also points out the value of traditional craftwork, in fact.

Story of the project:

We are all accustomed to using plastic or cristal pitchers, and we are forgetting about usefulness of “botijos” (earthenware pitchers), traditional Spanish pieces. With “Botijo Tomé”, we combine present’s requirements with materials and wise choices from past, connecting innovation with tradition. This proyect symbolizes the closeness of actual design to craftwork.

Furthermore, “Botijo Tomé” suggests to replace the use of plastic for ceramic, a material with a longer lifetime, and healthier to keep liquids in a long term, avoiding this way emission of micro plastics that usually contaminate water we drink.

Botijo Tomé’s form is conceived for dinning use, so it has two mouths. One of them allows the user for filling the pitcher with a tap, this is the short one, which is also the widest. The other mouth facilitates dining using. This one is designed to serve the liquid inside, and it is taller than the filling one. It’s size is prepared to be introduced in the fridge, in case the pitcher’s own cooling ability was not enough.

This project has been developed with expert craftswomen, who have taken part in the hole manufacture. At first, a ceramic prototype was created using a potter’s wheel, with a plaster mould. Then, with that piece as reference, we made a mould for its duplicates. The final product has enamelled surface, for a soft touch and a pleasant user experience.
